How Much Stress Is On Your Plate?

In my work with the Inner Circle, a monthly membership group for women, we are on the healthy habit this month of looking at our diet.  Not our calories and protein source, but what we feed ourselves in BODY, in MIND, and in SPIRIT.  Think about that for a second – what does your diet consist of?

As I was doing the research for my Inner Circle group this month, I came across a study that started in 2007 of the most common stresses we face.  And, last year, the state of our union ranked over money as a bigger cause of stress.  In other words, POLITICS over MONEY.  That’s a big deal.  Money is always fun to stress about but now POLITICS has jumped that in many of our minds?  Eek.  Does that feel true for you?

Ask yourself: How much stress are you  eating on a regular basis?  How much is on your plate?  How much technology are you taking in?  How much overwhelm and burnout are you feeling on a day-to-day basis?  Is it the state of the union that worries you?  Is it caring for an aging parent or loved one? Is it uncertainty and fear about terrorism, global warming, natural disasters that don’t feel quite so natural?  Is it that you hate your job?

Pause for a second and actually chew on this:  What does your diet consist of and where does that stress go?  We know the process of eating – digesting – and then evacuating, right?  Are you able to do that with your stress as well?  Do you have Self care built in to help you release the stress that builds up and overwhelms you?  Do you meditate?  Exercise?  Journal?  Get help coping with the wallops life can throw?  Do you need assistance?

I am a firm believer that stress is normal and even good for us.  Stress allows us to get up and moving, up and protesting, up and motivated.  But if we are not finding “down time” or time to digest our stress it buries us quickly.  It can show up in headaches, chronic fatigue, digestive issues, difficulty sleeping, irritability with family and friends, high blood pressure, lack of sex drive, flare ups in skin problems, weight gain or loss…and on and on and on.  In other words, our diet affects our health.  WOW!  Who knew!?

The interesting thing about all of this, is most of us already know everything I have laid out here, right?  I’ve not blown your mind. We already know it.  Yet, we just mindlessly continue to take it in.  Many of us even binge on it.  We get so habitual about our intake of long hours, heavy workloads, decision overwhelm, insecurity, we add weight to our already fragile systems and don’t even know it’s piling up.  Well, I am hoping this post will encourage you to pause.  A wake up call of sorts to pause.  Be mindful.

The Inner Circle homework this week, if you want to join us, is we are doing a Tech Detox.  Go 24 hours without facebook.  Go a weekend without the news.  Turn off the computer at 6pm and read a book.  Do something.  Do anything.  Be mindful of what and how much you eat.   It’s your life.  And it’s important.
